Ice in the Baltic
07/01/2003

Summary:-
The recent deterioration in the weather conditions suggest a severe winter ahead.

Full Story:-
Since the turn of the year the ice situation in the Baltic has deteriorated considerably with many forecasting worse conditions than those experienced in the winter of 1996. Ice breakers are already in use and in some ports tugs are compulsory when moving between berths causing delays and additional costs. With cargo freezing the speed of handling cargo has slowed causing additional delays.

Please visit our Baltic Line page for the latest port conditions which will be updated on a regular basis.

The photograph is of m.v. KAPTEN VOOLENS 24 hours out of Riga bound for Cardiff with timber and a considerable amount of ice on deck........
